Ihanat kurkut - wonderfull cucumbers

Tänä kuumana kesänä näytti kasviihuoneessa parhaiten lämmöstä nauttineen kurkut, joista useat ovat kasvaneet isoihin mittoihin. Tomaattisatoa ei näytä tulevan yhtä hienosti.

This summer the cucumbers seem to have enjoyed the hot weather in the greenhouse. Many of them has grown very big. The tomatoes have not been so lucky.

Ihmeiden aika - Time for miracles

Olin vakavasti sitä mieltä, että tänä kesänä ei mikään kasva kasvihuoneessa mutta toisin kävi. Ihmeiden aika ei ole ohitse tänäkään kesänä. Kurkku, joka kärsi yllätyksellisestä kylmyydestä toukokuussa, on puhjennut kukkaan.

I was seriously thinking that nothing would grow in the green house this summer but I was mistaken. The time of miracles is here. The cucumber which suffered of the cold in May is having flowers.

Peruna kasvaa komeasti.

The potatoe is growing handsomely.

Chili tuottaa jo satoa. Jokohan on kasvanut tarpeeksi suureksi?

The chili is producing harvest. Is it big enough already?

Yritit ja lehtikaali näyttävät hienoilta. Tomaatitkin ovat innostuneet kasvamaan ja kohta on odotettavissa niihinkin kukkia.

The herbs and borecole look good. The tomatoes are growing fine also and they will be blooming soon.

Mantsuriankärhö kasvaa myös hyvin.

The Clematis Mandschurica is pretty tall already.

Ja kesän ensimmäinen mansikka on kohta kypsä. Ihanaa!

And the first strawberry is ready soon. Wonderful!

Kasvihuoneen ja keijumetsän talvinen ilme - The winter face of the green house and fairy forest

Kasvihuone on saanut lumisen kuorrutuksen. Talvi tuli sittenkin niin nopeasti, etten ehtinyt istuttaa kaikkia hankkimiani kukkamukuloita maahan. Onneksi ennätin sopivasti peitellä köynnöskasvit talviturkin alle.

The green house has got the snow coverage. The winter came so fast thet I didn't have enough time to plant all the flower bulbs. Luckily I had enough time to cover the climbing flowers.

Myös keijumetsä on verhoutunut talveen ja odottelee tulevaa kevättä johon ei ole enää kuin n. 5 kuukautta.

Also the fairy forest got the winter coat and waits for the coming spring. We have to wait only five months.

Tuoreet kesäkuulumiset - Fresh Summer Greetings

Pitkästä aikaa terveiset kasvihuoneelta ja mökiltä. Kasvihuoneeseen tehty uusia järjestelyjä, jotka osittain vielä kesken. Tavarat etsivät vielä paikkaansa. Yksi kasvilaatikko puolitettu sopimaan paremmin tilaan. Onnistuin kasvattamaan itse vain kurkun taimet muut ostin torilta: tomaatit ja yrttien taimet. Lämpimät jaksot ovat saaneet jo perunantaimet kasvamaan. Istuttelin uusia kukkia kasvihuoneen lähelle. Ulos istutetut köynnökset selvisivät talvesta hyvin.

Olen niin tyytyväinen kastelujärjestelmään!

Laumaamme on tullut uusi jäsen. Ihana bernityttö!

Greetings from the green house and cottage after a while!

There has been some changes in the green house. Some of them are not finished yet. Some of the things are still looking for their places. One of the plant boxes has been divided into two boxes to fit better in the green house. I managed to grow the cucumbers. Other plants I bought from the market place like tomatoes and herbs. The warm periods have made the potatoes to grow. I planted new flowers outside the green house. The climbing flowers planted last year survived the winter nicely.  

I'm so happy with the watering system!

Voi mikä kesä! Oh what a summer

Tämä kesä on osoittautunut hankalaksi kasvihuoneemme kasveille. Tomaatit ovat vasta kasvattamassa vartttaan eikä kukista ole edes tietoa. Kurkut ovat kasvaneet heikosti. Kukkia niissä on sentään ollut ja yksi kurkun alkukin näkyi tänä viikonloppuna. Istutin kasvihuoneen ulkopuolelle kaareen uusia kärhöjä. Ne ovat aloittaneet kasvunsa hyvin. Aion jättää ne paikoilleen talveksi. Parhaiten ovat menestyneet kukat. Ensimmäiset kanttarellien alut on nähty.

This summer has proven to be difficult for our green house's plants. The tomatoes have just began to grow and there is no trace of flowers yet. The cucumbers have grown poorly. They have at least flowers and one beginning of a cucumber. I plant outside the green house new climbing flowers, Clematis Mandschurica. They have started to grow well. I intend to leave them on their places for the winter. The best grown plants this summer has been the flowers. And the first beginnings of the chantarelles have been seen.

Kevään tuntua - The Spring is arriving

Mökillä näkyi maanantaina kesän ensimmäinen perhonen, hyttisiäkin on jo näkynyt.

Vihdoinkin alkaa olemaan kevättä ympärillä. Vaikka mökkiseudullamme on vielä osissa järviä jäitä ja lunta, on oma mökkijärvemme jo vapaa niistä. Vapun aikaan satoi niin puhdasta ja valkoista lunta, että se häikäisi auringonpaisteessa silmiä.

Kotona kurkun taimet ovat hyvässä kasvussa, tomaattien kasvu on ollut hitaampaa. Onneksi pesin kasvihuoneen syksyllä. Sinne on nyt helppo viedä kasvit kasvamaan.

The first butterfly of the coming summer has been seen and so has been seen the mosquitos. 

Finally the spring is coming even though on some of the nearby lakes there is still ice and snow. Our cottage's lake is free of them. The snow that came down on the 1st of May was so white and clean that it shined so bright that it hurt my eyes.

At home the cucumbers are growing fast but the growth of the tomatoes has been slower. Luckily I cleaned the green house in the Autumn so it's easy to take the plants there to grow.

Kasvihuone siirretty talviunille - Green house transferred to winter sleep

Kasvihuoneen kolmas kesä on nyt takana. Tomaatit eivät ehtineet kypsyä siellä. Otin ne olohuoneeseen kuivaustelineelle kypsymään. Poistin kasvulaatikoista osan mullasta pois. Pesin kasvihuoneen sisältä ja ulkoa. 

The third year of the green house is over now. The tomatoes stayed green and I took them home to get red. I removed part of the soil out of the wooden boxes. And cleaned the green house inside out.

Ehti sataa ensimmäisen lumen ennen kuin kasvihuone peitettiin pressulla ja sisälle laitettiin laudat pystyyn tukemaan rakenteita katolle kertyvän lumen varalta. 

It snowed the first snow before we covered it with a cover and put boards inside to support the structure of the green house in case it snows a lot. 

Samettiruusut kasvoivat vasta syyskuussa korkeiksi ja kukat olivat ihanan oransseja.

The velvet roses didn't grew up until on September but then they grew very high and the flowers were lovely orange,

Ensimmäinen mansikka - First strawberry

Ensimmäinen mansikka on vihdoin kypsynyt. Maistui hyvältä. Löysimme viime viikonloppuna läheltä sattumalta paljon metsämansikoita. Ne vasta maistuvat hyviltä.

Kuumat säät ovat edistäneet tomaattien ja kurkkujen kasvua. Vihdoinkin kurkuissa on paljon kukkia. Toivottavasti kurkkujakin ehtii kypsyä. Kaikki kasvit näyttävät nyt runsailta. Kastelujärjestelmä sekä kasvihuoneen itseaukeavat ikkunat ovat olleet tarpeen. Nyt on hyvä aika jäädä lomalle!

Finally the first strawberry is ready. It tasted good. We found last week end nearby some forest strawberries and they tasted sweet.

The hot weather has promoted the growth of the tomatoes and the cucumbers. At last there are lots of flowers in the cucumbers. Hopefully we get some full grown ones. All the plants look so good now. The  watering system and automatic windows have been very useful at the green house. Now is good time to start the summer holiday!

Talviteloilleen - ready for the winter

Olemme valmistelleet kasvihuonetta muutaman viikon ajan talvea varten. Peitimme kasvihuoneen pressulla ja  laitettiin kakkosneloset parrut tukemaan kehikkoa lumen painon varalta.

We have been prepairing the green house for the winter for some time now. We covered it with a cover and placed inside some four by two boards to support the frame incase of heavy snow burden.

Lokakuun alussa ehdimme pestä kasvihuoneen sisältä ja ulkoa. Käytimme Bio puhdistusainetta, joka ruiskutettiin paineruiskulla ja huuhdeltiin järvivedellä. Erittäin köyttökelpoiseksi puhdistusvälineeksi osoittautui Sinituotteista ulkoharja valokatteille. Pesu ulkoapäin tapahtui eka kerran ja jopa lähti joka puolelta vihreä sammalkasvusto pois. Tyhjensimne myös muoviset kasvilaatikot. Ensi kesäksi on tarkoitus rakentaa puiset kasvilaatikot.

At the beginning of the October were had just time to wash the green house inside and outside. We used some bio cleanser which was sprayed with a sprayer and washed away with lake water. We discovered that a brush that is used outside to clean the plastic coverings was wery good. We washed the green house outside first time and the green mold disappeared. We emptied the plastic plant boxes. For the next summer we intend to build wooden boxes for the plants.

Köynnösruusu ehti tehdä ennen eka pakkasia useampiakin kukkia. Peittelemme ruusut vielä ennen talventuloa pakkasharsolla. Olisi tarkoitus istuttaa ulos vielä keväällä kukkivien kukkien mukuloita ellei pakkanen ehdi iskeä maahan. Tällä hetkellä on taas lämmimtä ja kaikki lumi on sulanut pois.

The climbing rose succeeded to grow many flowers before the first frosts. The roses will be covered with a frost cover before the winter arrives fully. It was ment to plant some bulbs of the spring flowers if the frost doesn't srike first. At the moment it is warm again and the first snow has melted away.

Ja iloksemme köynnöskärhö ennätti kasvattamaan ja aukaisemaan kaksi kukkaansa, jotka huomasin kun otin köynnöstä pois kasvihuoneen ympärilä. Ihana yllätys!

Oh, the other clombing flower also opened some flowers. I found two of them when taking it down. Wonderfull surprise!

Sadonkorjuu - kesä on ohi - melkein The Harvest - Summer is over - almost

Päätin poimia tomaatit ja kompostoida kaikki tomaattien ja kurkkujen varret. Suurin osa tomaateista oli raakoja. Tomaatteja tuli sangollinen, kurkkuja ei enää ollut kasvanut. Tomaatit kypsyvät nyt sisällä kuivaustelineeseen ripustettuna. Kasvihuoneeseen jäi vielä kasvamaan persiljaa, salaattia, oreganoa, timjamia ja pelargoneja. Ja riippuvat tomaattien tukilangat ovat kuin luuranko. Sopii tulevaan Halloweeniin.

I decided to pick all the tomatoes and compost the stalks of the tomatoes and the cucumbers. Most of the tomatoes were raw. The tomatoes filled up a bucket. No cucumbers anymore. The tomatoes are now ripening inside hanged up to the drying rack. There are still growing or at least living some parsley, salad, oregano, thyme and geranium in the green house. And the support threads of the tomatoes which are like a skeleton. Fits the coming Halloween. 

Köynnösruusu kuitenkin ehti avaamaan vielä kukkiaan. Kiva!

Suoraan kasvihuoneelta Live from the green house

Tomaatti oli ehtinyt kypsyä, jee! Ja pari muutakin on punastumassa. Kolme kurkkua on kypsynyt. Keväällä istuttamani toinen runkoruusu (punainen) näyttäisi ehtivän avata kukkansa. Valkoisen runkoruusun kasvu ei ole lähtenyt yhtä hyvin liikkeelle. Ehkä liian lähelle istuttamani kelloköynnös, joka on levinnyt hienosti mutta ei ole kukkinut, on syynä ruusun huonoon lähtöön. Hyttysiä kyllä riittää vielä!

The tomatoe managed to get fully red, yes! And two other ones are getting red. Three cucumbers are ready. The other climbing rose (the red one) I planted in Spring seems to blossom soon. The white one's growth hasn't started so well. Perhaps the other climbing flower which I planted very close and which has spread very well is the reason why the white rose hasn't grown. There are still some mosquitos around!

Kurkkuja ja tomaatteja Cucumbers and tomatoes

Kurkkuja vaan jaksaa vielä kypsyä ja uusiakin olisi tulossa, kun kukkiakin vielä löytyy. Toisin on tomaattieni kanssa. Harmittavasti kosteus on tehnyt tuhojaan ja lämpöäkin ei ole ollut enää tarpeeksi, kun vasta toinen tomaatti vähän punertaa. Onneksi vihreät tomaatit ovat herkullisia säilöttynä. Poimin jo kaikki pienet vihreät tomaatit ja jätin isommat vielä paikoilleen toivoen niiden kuitenkin kypsyvän.

The cucumbers keep still growing. There are new flowers on the cucumbers so I expect still some new cucumbers. The situation is not the same at all with the tomatoes. The moisture has made it's damage and there has not been warm enough anymore. Only the second tomatoe is getting red. Luckily the green tomatoes are delicious when they are preserved. I picked already all the small green tomatoes and left the big ones to mature. Hopefully!

Elokuun lopun yö Late August Night

Ipadilla ei oikein saa kunnon kuvia hämärässä mutta tässä tunnelma kasvihuoneesta perjaintai-iltana. Kivat värivalot toimivat patterilla.

The iPad is not a good way of taking photos at dusk but here is an athmosphere in the green house at Friday evening. The nice colourful lights work with the batteries.

Tämän päivän satoa Today's harvest

Tänään löytyi mökiltä taas ihania kanttarelleja ja kasvihuoneesta kurkkuja.

Today at the cottage I found some lovely Chanterelles. The cucumbers came from the green house.

Löytöjä rompetorilta Findings in the Flea Market

Kävimme eilen tulomatkalla mökille matkanvarrella Rompetorilla. Heti ensimmäisen myyjän pöydältä sattui silmään juuri kasvihuoneeseen sopiva muki. Lisäksi toiselta myyjältä löytyi kukka, joka on mielestäni yksi kauneimmistä - malva. Istutin sen ulos penkkiin. Toivottavasti se menestyy edellistä paremmin.

We visited yesterday a Flea Market when coming to the cottage. At the first seller's table my eye caught a perfect thing for the green house - a mug. From another seller I found a flower which I think is one of the most beautiful - a Mallow. I planted it outside. I hope it flourishes more successfully than the previous one.

Kasvien kastelu Watering the plants

Hankimme jo ensimmäiseksi kesäksi viime vuonna mm. tomaateille ja kurkuille kastelujärjestelmän. Kasvihuoneessa ei ole sähköä eikä sinne tule vettä muuten kuin kantamalla. Kasvit ovat kuitenkin kastelematta välillä viikonkin. Tutkimme vaihtoehtoja, jotka sopisivat meidän tapaukseen. Päädyimme automaattiseen Plumat-kastelujärjestelmään, joka ei tarvitse sähköä. Vesi kannetaan muoviseen saaviin, joka on tarpeeksi korkealla lattiasta. Saaviin laitettiin hana, johon kastelujärjestelmä liitettiin ja se toimii loistavasti. Kastelujärjestelmä on osoittautunut erityisen tarpeelliseksi tänä kesänä kuuman sään takia.

We purchased an automatic drip watering system for the tomatoes and cucumbers. There is no electricity or running water at the green house. The plants may stay without water a week so we explored the options which could suit us. We ended up to the Plumat-system which don't need electricity. The water is carried to the plastic container which is higher enough. We put a tap to the container and attached the system to the tap and it works nicely. The watering system has proved to be especially necessary this summer because of the hot weather that we have had.

Kasvihuone sisältä, Inside The Green House

Sisältä kasvihuoneessa näyttää tältä. Eniten tilaa vievät siemenestä kasvatetut tomaatit ja kurkut. Siemenet on tilattu Hyötykasviyhdistyksestä heti vuoden alusta ja hyvin siemenet itivät. Kurkkusatoa on tullut jo kivasti ja lisää on tulossa. Tomaattisato odottaa vielä kypsymistään.

Inside the green house looks like this. Most of the space takes tomatoes and cucumbers. I have grown them from the seeds which I ordered from the Association of Useful Plants I have had already many cucumbers and there is more to come. The tomatoes are growing fine but they are not ready yet.

Kasvihuone - The Green House

Tältä kasvihuoneemme näyttää ulkopuolelta tänä kesänä heinäkuussa. Kasvihuone (Palram Snap & Grow 8'8 x Extension 4') rakennettiin viime vuoden toukokuussa. Se on keskellä metsää kesämökillämme. Perustaksi tuli betonilaatta, joka on osoittautunut helpoksi pitää puhtaampana mullasta ja oksista yms. Sisäänkäynnin edessä on metsän puista rakennettu kaari, johon suunnittelin kiertämään runkoruusun (Fabulous Moscow Rose and White). Istutin ne vasta tänä kesänä, joten joudun odottelemaan muutaman kesän, että ruusut leviäisivät kaarelle. Täksi kesäksi ostin kaarta kiertämään kelloköynnöksen, joka on levinnytkin hienosti mutta kukat antavat odottaa.

This is how our green house looks like this July.  We built it last year in May. The green house is in the middle of the forest at our summer cottage. The floor of the green house is made of concrete. It's easier to keep the floor cleaner out of the soil, the branches and the leaves. At the front of the entrance is a wooden arch built of the trees of the summer cottage. I planted climbing roses that I'd like to climb over the arch. But since it will take some summers to happen I planted this summer another climbing flower that has grown beautifully. There are no flowers yet.
