Tomaatit ja kurkut laatikoihin - tomatoes and cucumbers to their boxes

Tomaatit ja kurkut on nyt istutettu uusin laatikoihin. Laitoimme laatikoiden pohjalle kiviä sekä Leca-kevytsoraa. Keräsin kiviä tontilta pariin laatikkoon ja pariin laatikkoon ostimme soraa, joka osoittautui riittoisaksi. Yksi 25 l pussi riitti isoimpaan laatikkoon. Soran päälle tuli vielä suodatinkangas ennen turvemullan laittoa. Turvemultaa ostimme kaikkiaan 1000 litraa 50 l säkeissä, joten minäkin jaksoin kantaa säkkejä ylös kasvihuoneelle. Laatikot vuorattiin ensin rakennusmuovilla, että laatikot kestäisivät pidempään. Muoviin tehtiin muutama reikä pohjiin, että liika vesi valuisi pois. Laitettiin myös kastelujärjestelmä toimintaan. Siirsimme muovisen vesiastian kasvihuoneen toiselle puolelle, että tila tulisi paremmin käyttöön. 

Kastelujärjestelmän asentaminen onnistui tälläkin kertaa.

Istutin laatikoihin myös kasvattamiani paprikan ja oreganon taimia. Lisäksi laitoin multaan herneen, salaatin, persiljan ja timjamin siemeniä. Istutin myös samettikukan siemeniä torjumaan mahdollisia tuholaisia, jos niitä sattuisi ilmaantumaan.

Bernityttömme huiskaisi hännällään vahingossa yhden tomaatin taimenen poikki, joten nyt on vain kaksi itse kasvattamaan taimenta jäljellä. Taidan ostaa yhden valmiin taimenen ja käsittelen sen ennen kasvihuoneeseen laittoa ettei tuholaisia tulisi sen mukana.

Istutin kasvihuoneen ulkopuolelle penkkiin kehäkukan siemeniä. Ne ovat niin kauniita.

Osa aiemmin istutetuista pioneista on lähtenyt kasvamaan. Toivottavasti loputkin pionit lähtevät kasvamaan. Runkoruusuissa ei ole vielä silmuja mutta ne näyttävät selvinneen talvesta.

Laitoin myös perhosbaarin taas riippumaan.

The tomatoes and the cucumbers are now planted into the new wooden boxes. We put expanded clay pellets and rocks on the bottom of the boxes. I collected some rocks from our lot to some of the bocxes ja put the expanded clay pellets to some of the boxes. 25 litres bag of the expanded clay pellets was plenty enought for the whole big wooden box. We put the filter fabric on the top of the pellets before adding the turf compost. We bought 1000 litres of the turf in 50 litres bags so that I could also carry the bags up to the green house. We lined the wooden boxes with builder plastic so that the boxes would last longer. We made few small holes on the bottom of the plastic so that the extra water would run off. We put also the watering system on it's place. The plastic water container was moved to the other side of the green house to maximise the space inside the green house. The watering systems seems to work also this time. 

I planted also pepper, oregano, pees, salad, parsley and thyme plants or seeds. To prevent possible pests I planted also some marigold seeds into the green house. 

One of our Bernise girl accidently cut one of the tomato plant with one sweep of her strong tail. I think I will buy one tomatoe plant and treat it before planting into the green house.

Outside of the green house I planted some marigolds. They are so lovely.

Part of the pioneses have started to grow. Hopefully the remaining ones will start too.

The climbing roses don't have any buds yet but they seem to have survived the winter.

I also hanged the bar for the butterflies.

Parvekeremontin takia emme voi tänä kesänä käyttää parveketta. Toimme parvekkeella olleen suihkulähteen täksi kesäksi mökille solisemaan. Laitoimme sen lekaharkkojen päälle. Muoviastian ympärillä on parvekkeen lattiasta ylimääräiset laudat suojana ja koristeena. Astian pinnalla on verkko, johon laitoimme koristekiviä sekä viime kesänä tekemiäni betonisia koristeita (mm. laiva, koira, meritähtiä ja kaloja). Käytin valussa apuna lasten hiekkaleikkimuotteja. Toimivat hyvin.

Due to the balcony renovation we can't use it this summer. So we brought the fountain which we have used in our balcony to the cottage for this summer to burble. We put it on the leca bricks. The plastic water container has been covered with extra board from the balcony floor building. There is a metallic net on the surface of the container and we put on it some decoration stones and concrete ornaments (like a ship, a dog, some starfishes and fishes) which I made last summer. As casts for the concrete I used casts ment to be used in childrens' sand play. The casts worked well.

Puiset kasvilaatikot ja orvokkeja - Wooden boxes and some violets

Kasvatin kasvihuoneessa kahtena ensimmäisenä vuonna tomaatit, kurkut ja salaatit muovisissa astioissa. Suunnitelmissa oli kuitenkin rakentaa puiset kasvilaatikot. Niinpä toiveeni toteutti puolisoni, joka rakensi ne tänä viikonloppuna.

Puuna käytimme täyssärmäistä kuusta koko 22x100 ST. Laatikoita tuli 3 kpl= 50x50x110 cm  ja 1 kpl=50x50x170 cm. Yhteensä puuta meni n. 80 metriä ja hinnaksi tuli n. 60 euroa ts. ei kovin paljon. Näissä laatkoissa kasvattaa tomaatteja, kurkkuja ja muuta hyvää syötävää monta vuotta. Kasvihuonekin näyttää nyt siistimmältä ja organisoidummalta.

Nyt sitten pitää ostaa tarpeeksi kevytsoraa ja turvemultaa laatikoihin ja niitä meneenkin jonkin verran.

I grew tomatoes, cucumbers and salads for the first two years in the plastic boxes. I planned to grow the vegetables etc. some day in the wooden boxes. So he fulfilled my dream this week end and built them:). 

We used square edged spruce size 22x100 (millimeters) and built three boxes in the size of 50x50x110 centimeters and one box in the size of 50x50x170 centimeters. All together we used about 80 meters of wood and the total price was about 60 euros. Not very expensive. In these boxes we grow many tomatoes, cucumbers and other good stuff many years. The green house looks now more organized.

Next we need to buy enough light gravel and compost to fill up the boxes. And we need lot.

Istutin myös orvokkeja ruukkuihin mökin lähelle. Kävin muuten uimassa tänä viikonloppuna ja veden lämpötila oli nyt + 8 astetta. Heitin talviturkkini jo 2 viikkoa sitten. Veden lämpötila oli silloin +6 astetta.

I planted also some violets near the cottage. By the way I swam this week end and the temperature of the water at the lake was now + 8 degree Celsius. I "dropped my winter coat" as it is said in Finnish two weeks ago and the water's temperature was then + 6 degree Celsius.

Kevättä ilmassa ja vessan tarina - Spring is in the air and the toilet story

Kovin tuntuu jo keväältä. Joutsen pariskunta näkyi järven jäällä, avovettä ei vielä ollut. Kasvihuone on selviytynyt leudosta talvesta hyvin. Saa nähdä lähtevätkö köynnösruusut uuteen kasvuun. Uudet kurkun, tomaatin ja yrittien siemenet ovat tulleet. 

It feels like spring already.  A swan couple was on the lake's ice but there was not yet open water. The green house passed the mild winter well. Hopefully the climbing roses will grow again. The new seeds of cucumber, tomatoe and herbs have arrived.

Ensimmäisiä rakennuksia, joita mökillemme rakensimme, oli ulkovessa. 

The very first buildings that we built to our cottage was the outdoor toilet.

Biolanin kompostikäymälä toimiin loistavasti. Hajuongelmista ei ole tarvinnut kärsiä. Ylimääräisistä laudoista tehtin kuivikkelle oma säilytysastia ja maalasin sen yhdellä valitulla sinisellä.

Seinällä riippuvat wc-paperien säilytyslokerot.

The composting toilet Biolan works very well. There is no odour. We built a box for the bulking material from some the board that was remaining from the building work. I painted the box with one of the blues I chose for the toilet. There are toilet paper "bags" on the wall.

Innoitukseni vessan sisuksen väreihin sain kirjasta "Rakas mökki" ja niinpä käytin kolmea erilaista sinistä maalia. Lopputulos oli mielestäni hieno. Ikean Blanda Blank tarjoilukulho toimii käsienpesualtaana.  

The inspiration for the three blues for the toilet I got from a book called "Dear cottage". I like the result a lot. Ikea Blanda Blank serving dish works as a hand washing sink.

Romanttinen taulu sopii värinsä perusteella paikalleen.

Loppu syksystä ehdin vielä betonitöihin. Tein kynttilänjalkoja. Muottina käytin muovisia 1,5 litran limsapulloja, joista leikkasin n. puolet pois. Pohjaosan rasvasin sisäpuolelta ja täytin betonilla. Upotin betoniin kynttilän, joka olisi varmaan pitänyt ottaa pois jossain vaiheessa. Tätä en kuitenkaan tehnyt. Kynttilänjalan päälle pintaan upotin eri värisiä mosaiikin paloja. Ajattelin maalata kynttilänjalat jouluksi valkeiksi mutta en ehtinyt. Ehkä maalaan ne ensi jouluksi. Hyvää joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta!

At the end of the August I had the time to do some concrete work. I made some candlesticks. I used the plastic 1,5 litre soft drink bottles as a mold. I cut the bottles in half and used the bottom part. I greased the interior of the bottom parts and filled them with the concrete. I put a candle into the concrete and should have taken the candles off later but I didin't do it. To the upper part of the candle to the surface I put some peaces of the mosaic of various colours. I thought of painting the candles later white for the Christmas but I didn't have time. Perhaps I paint them for next Christmas. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sipuleita maahan - Some bulbs into the ground

Ehdin vielä istuttaa muutaman kukkasipulin maahan ennen lumen ja pakkasen tuloa. Istutin myös pääsiäisenä sisällä kukkineet narsissit, jos nekin kukkisivat ensi kesänä.

I managed to plant some bulbs before the snow and frosts. I planted also some last Easter's Narcissus if they blossom next Spring.

Talviteloilleen - ready for the winter

Olemme valmistelleet kasvihuonetta muutaman viikon ajan talvea varten. Peitimme kasvihuoneen pressulla ja  laitettiin kakkosneloset parrut tukemaan kehikkoa lumen painon varalta.

We have been prepairing the green house for the winter for some time now. We covered it with a cover and placed inside some four by two boards to support the frame incase of heavy snow burden.

Lokakuun alussa ehdimme pestä kasvihuoneen sisältä ja ulkoa. Käytimme Bio puhdistusainetta, joka ruiskutettiin paineruiskulla ja huuhdeltiin järvivedellä. Erittäin köyttökelpoiseksi puhdistusvälineeksi osoittautui Sinituotteista ulkoharja valokatteille. Pesu ulkoapäin tapahtui eka kerran ja jopa lähti joka puolelta vihreä sammalkasvusto pois. Tyhjensimne myös muoviset kasvilaatikot. Ensi kesäksi on tarkoitus rakentaa puiset kasvilaatikot.

At the beginning of the October were had just time to wash the green house inside and outside. We used some bio cleanser which was sprayed with a sprayer and washed away with lake water. We discovered that a brush that is used outside to clean the plastic coverings was wery good. We washed the green house outside first time and the green mold disappeared. We emptied the plastic plant boxes. For the next summer we intend to build wooden boxes for the plants.

Köynnösruusu ehti tehdä ennen eka pakkasia useampiakin kukkia. Peittelemme ruusut vielä ennen talventuloa pakkasharsolla. Olisi tarkoitus istuttaa ulos vielä keväällä kukkivien kukkien mukuloita ellei pakkanen ehdi iskeä maahan. Tällä hetkellä on taas lämmimtä ja kaikki lumi on sulanut pois.

The climbing rose succeeded to grow many flowers before the first frosts. The roses will be covered with a frost cover before the winter arrives fully. It was ment to plant some bulbs of the spring flowers if the frost doesn't srike first. At the moment it is warm again and the first snow has melted away.

Ja iloksemme köynnöskärhö ennätti kasvattamaan ja aukaisemaan kaksi kukkaansa, jotka huomasin kun otin köynnöstä pois kasvihuoneen ympärilä. Ihana yllätys!

Oh, the other clombing flower also opened some flowers. I found two of them when taking it down. Wonderfull surprise!

Sadonkorjuu - kesä on ohi - melkein The Harvest - Summer is over - almost

Päätin poimia tomaatit ja kompostoida kaikki tomaattien ja kurkkujen varret. Suurin osa tomaateista oli raakoja. Tomaatteja tuli sangollinen, kurkkuja ei enää ollut kasvanut. Tomaatit kypsyvät nyt sisällä kuivaustelineeseen ripustettuna. Kasvihuoneeseen jäi vielä kasvamaan persiljaa, salaattia, oreganoa, timjamia ja pelargoneja. Ja riippuvat tomaattien tukilangat ovat kuin luuranko. Sopii tulevaan Halloweeniin.

I decided to pick all the tomatoes and compost the stalks of the tomatoes and the cucumbers. Most of the tomatoes were raw. The tomatoes filled up a bucket. No cucumbers anymore. The tomatoes are now ripening inside hanged up to the drying rack. There are still growing or at least living some parsley, salad, oregano, thyme and geranium in the green house. And the support threads of the tomatoes which are like a skeleton. Fits the coming Halloween. 

Köynnösruusu kuitenkin ehti avaamaan vielä kukkiaan. Kiva!

The climbing rose opened some of it's flowers though. Nice!
